Tuesday Tiny Tips

  • Marriage, Faith & Parenting Tip-Mentors 8/1/17

One of the greatest things you can do for your marriage is to have Godly mentors in your life that will pour into you.

We are so grateful to Dave and Ann Wilson, Jerry Martin (seen above) and Tom and Peg Woodside, to name a few, who have led the way in front of us on this great journey.

Now for years when Carol and I mentor young couples we are always handing down the things we learned from these incredible friends.

We now have some couples we have mentored for years who are now mentoring young couples and passing on the wisdom that was passed on to us. That’s pretty cool.

If you don’t have mentors in your life, commit to pray and ask God to bring some into your life.

Take a look around and they may already be in your life waiting to be asked.

  • Faith Tip-The Lord’s Name 7/25/17

To do something in vain is to do it without purpose.

The Bible says not to take the Lord’s name in vain. What does this mean exactly?

You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain. Exodus 20:7 (NKJV)

This means anytime we say any of God’s names without purpose we are taking His name in vain.

A good thing to remember is when we say God’s name we need to be talking to Him or about Him.

Some people think taking the Lord’s name in vain just involves putting a swear word after it.

There are a lot of Christians who say God’s name without talking to Him or about Him all the time. “Oh God that’s terrible I am so sorry to hear that.” “For Christ’s sake I can’t believe that.”  “Good Lord I didn’t realize that.”

So what is the big deal about this commandment?

This is the heartbeat behind the offense. When we say anyone of God’s names, we have His undivided attention.

To say His name and then not be talking to or about Him is rude and offensive to God and is a sin.

When we say God’s name, He says, “Yes, I’m listening.” Every time.

I say to myself, “Brett do not take God’s name in vain. God’s name is Holy and I have His undivided attention when I say it and then ignore Him.”

Remember it is one of the Ten Commandments along with Do Not Murder. God wants us to take this very seriously.

Have you been doing this without realizing the great offense? It’s not too late to make a change.

  • Parenting Tip-The Great Outdoors 7/18/17

In our busy lives, most adults are unaware that there are great numbers of studies being done that link healthier living to being in and among nature and forests.

Scientific evidence is pointing to the conclusion that children who spend time playing near trees are less stressed out then children who are always indoors.

I can buy that. I think most of us can.

We have a wood and wetlands near our house that allowed our kids to take a break from their video games and enjoy the benefits of looking for turtles and frogs and taking walks among God’s creation.

So this Tip is to simply say, “Let’s encourage our kids to get outside, be active and discover what God has for them in His great nature.”

Healthier parenting. Healthier kids. Healthier living.

Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let the sea resound, and all that is in it. Let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them; let all the trees of the forest sing for joy. Psalms 96:11-12 (NIV)

“But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds in the sky, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish in the sea inform you. Which of all these does not know that the hand of the Lord has done this? In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind. Job 12:7-10 (NIV)

  • Family Tip-Prayer 7/11/17

The family that prays together stays together.

    To start the day.
    Meal times.
In the car before a trip.
In the car when you see an ambulance.
In the car on the way to your favorite place.
Before the kids start their day at school.
When you find out someone is hurting.
    Before the big project.
    When someone is stressed.
    When you’re thankful.
    To end the day.

The more you do it, the more a part of the family fabric it becomes.

The family that prays together stays together.

    Pray on.
