We have some dear friends who asked my wife Carol and me a very critical question years ago.
This family was going through a very difficult time. The trials in their lives were overwhelming and they had come to the end of their rope.
I remember sitting in their family room listening to them understandably cry out for help. They said this to us, “Brett and Carol, you have gone through so many dark trials in your lives. And as many as there have been you guys seem to always trust God and stay on the path of believing that He is going to work things out for you. How do you do it?”
I remember sitting back on their couch and really pondering that question for a moment before I answered.
And then I said, “The truth of the matter is, we believe God is for us and not against us. So no matter what happens, we believe God is on our side cheering us on. And if God is for us, who can be against us? I didn’t always believe this but when I started to, it drastically changed my life.”
Then I asked these dear Christian friends one question, “Do you believe God is for you?”
It was their turn to be quiet and think.
After a moment they answered, “No.”
“Okay,” I said. That’s where we need to start.”
Over the next year, we counseled them again and again from what we believe to be the absolute truth: what we have learned from the Bible about God being on our side.
In a nutshell, when we look closely at the whole message of the Bible from cover to cover, we see the true story of God revealing that He had a plan from the beginning of time.
That plan was to rescue us, His children, from death. The entire Old Testament points the way forward to the work that Jesus would do through His perfect life, death, and resurrection.
The New Testament then is God revealing His Son, Jesus. And Jesus accomplished God’s perfect plan without blemish. Jesus made the way for us to be forever on God’s team. God is now, because of the work of Jesus, forever for us and not against us. God placed His entire wrath that we deserve for our sins on Jesus, and then He paid the price in full for our sins on the cross.
This is the Good News. This is the Gospel. God is for us and not against us.
It was a very big deal to Carol and I when we finally heard these words from this young couple: “Alright we get it now. We believe that God is for us and not against us.”
We have seen their lives change dramatically since then.
They still have all the trials this life and the enemy can throw at them, but their perspective has completely changed.
Now they know that our God is cheering them on. They believe the promise that the trials of this life are temporary and that we will one day have no more tears, no more darkness, and no more suffering or sorrow.
So I have a question for you.
Do you believe God is for you or against you?
Dive into the Bible and discover for yourself. He is crazy about you and has done everything to make the way for you to be on His team. Forever.
What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? Romans 8:31 (NIV)
